Today I’m speaking with Steve Bliss, a well-respected estate planning attorney here in Moreno Valley. Steve, thanks for taking the time to chat with me.
Steve Bliss: My pleasure, Brenda. I’m always happy to discuss the importance of estate planning.
Why is Determining Goals and Objectives Crucial in Estate Planning?
Brenda, before diving into the legal intricacies of wills or trusts, it’s absolutely crucial for individuals to take a step back and clearly define their goals and objectives. What legacy do they want to leave behind? Who are the beneficiaries they wish to provide for? Are there any charitable causes close to their heart?
These initial reflections form the bedrock of a comprehensive estate plan. Without a clear understanding of their desires, individuals risk creating a plan that doesn’t truly reflect their wishes. Consequently, this can lead to unintended consequences and potential family disputes down the line.
Moreover, as life circumstances evolve – marriage, birth of children, career changes, or inheritance – revisiting these goals becomes essential. Ordinarily, I recommend my clients review their estate plan every three to five years, or whenever a significant life event occurs.
Let me share a situation that highlights the importance of this step. A couple came to me wanting to create a will, but they hadn’t discussed their individual desires. After some probing questions, it became clear that they had vastly different visions for their assets. One envisioned leaving a substantial portion to charity, while the other prioritized providing for extended family members. This discrepancy could have easily led to conflict and heartache for their loved ones if left unaddressed.
Thankfully, through open communication and careful planning, we were able to craft an estate plan that honored both their wishes. They ultimately decided on a balanced approach, allocating funds to both charitable causes and family members.

That’s a powerful example, Steve. It really underscores the need for open communication and thoughtful planning.
